In November I returned to Hale Kai on the Kona side of the Big Island. These small gatherings of advanced singers are miraculous, tender, full of Hawaiian culture, endless singing and daily circles of our music work with each singer opening like a Hibiscus flower, generosity, friendships evolving between singers arriving from New Zealand, Sweden, Norway, Germany, France, the UK and all over the US, wholesome delicious food, laughing, more singing, swimming in the calm and benevolent bay, watching stupendous sunsets, more laughing, beautiful kumuhula Raylene, the hula dancers; Taipe, Monju and Savana, Kalani and Julie in the kitchen, feeding us and teaching us daily lessons in Hawaiian language, healing and cosmology, extraordinay dinner with Mayumi Oda and her kupuna from Cambodia and Tahiti, the promise of dolphins, all of it.
To all the 12 singers who were there. You were a splendid group. I treasure all that happened there and forever hold you in that circle of E ho mai on the lava with the tide coming to our feet. Ahhhh!
This is a place of o’hana, family, so I am always happy when Suzanne, my manager, gets to be there and Janne Watson, my partner, as well. Janne’s photos tell more about this gathering than any of my words can say. If you want to see more of her eye on Hawaii, she will soon post more photos and a video. Stay tuned.
